If you really would like a date in a green box that is not underlined, just call us and we will try to help.

Welcome to an Isle of Lewis holiday cottage – Benshaw Cottage

A Lewis holiday cottage where you can get away from it all. That is exactly how to describe Benshaw Cottage. It is set in a quiet crofting village called Tobson, set beside a calm inland sea loch.

With good kitchen and bathroom facilities, it is just the place for a relaxing self-catering holiday on Great Bernera, an island with a road bridge to it which is off the west of the Isle of Lewis.

Who for?

Singletons, couples, families and groups of friends regularly come to Benshaw Cottage. The cottage sleeps up to four with a double bed in one bedroom and two singles in the other.

Benshaw Cottage overlooks a placid sea loch, known locally in Gaelic as An t-Òb (The Obbe – an inland waterway). Whether you are an avid photographer, an aurora borealis watcher, a trout and salmon fisherman, a sea angler or walker or are just a nature lover, Benshaw Cottage is ideal as a base.

Lochs and rivers in the Western Isles, also known as the Outer Hebrides, are known for their fishing and the clear, unpolluted air and skies make it very special. This cottage is for those seeking a very relaxing break – even the clocks run quiet. There is so much to see and do.

Wot? No wi-fi?

Our reviews show how former guests tell us they loved having a holiday without constantly checking emails, etc. So we have not installed wi-fi. Free wi-fi is available at the local community centre, two miles away and at other island locations. Mobile phone signal is available from the main networks up the nearby hill and on other high points but not actually in the cottage.

Holiday cottage – welcome to Benshaw

Holiday cottage Benshaw is a self-catering former crofthouse which has two bedrooms – one with a double bed and the other has two singles. It is in the village of Tobson which is on Great Bernera, an island with a road bridge to it which is off the west of the Isle of Lewis. It is about 26 miles west of Stornoway.

This holiday cottage is suitable for up to four people whether solo travellers, couples, families, or anyone else keen to explore the rugged Hebrides.

Facilities

In the bathroom is a toilet, wash-hand basin and a shower over the bath. So you may have either a shower or soak in the tub. Heating is via storage heaters and there is an electric fire in the living room.  All electricity charges are included in the price, of course.

holiday cottage
The kitchen is well-equipped with utensils and has a breakfast bar and dining table.

The kitchen is well-equipped with a cooker, a fridge, a washing machine / dryer, a microwave, a toaster and a kettle.  A radio with CD player is also there.

In the living room, which has a leather sofa and swivel chair, is a flatscreen TV with the usual non-premium satellite Sky TV channels. It has a built-in DVD player and a collection of film and TV show DVDs is in the sideboard drawer. You will also find board games. In the hall cupboards, by the bedrooms, you will find an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer, as well as all spare linen and towels. There are also portable barbeques and umbrellas which you should feel to use – depending on the weather.

There is on-road and off-road parking available on the slope outside the cottage.  We regret that the door widths, etc., mean the cottage is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Wi-fi and mobiles

There is no wi-fi in Benshaw Cottage although the Bernera Community Centre at Breaclete, two miles away, has free wi-fi.  There is no mobile signal at the cottage but the main networks can be received just a few yards up the road from the cottage.
